TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My teaching philosophy is based on working closely with Yeesun Kim (cellist of the Borromeo Quartet) and Michael Reynolds (cellist of the Muir Quartet). In addition, I’ve worked closely with members of the Cleveland, Juilliard, Orion, and Jupiter Quartets in exploring the variety of the chamber music literature. Working with leading chamber musicians intensively, I have learned principles of musical character, phrasing, dynamic range, and nuances.

My cello teaching emphasizes on guiding each students to bring out his or her “voice” through the instrument. Each student has his or her passions and talent, as well as technical and musical strengths and weaknesses. I believe in teaching fundamental principles of technique that can be applied universally. I help my students to build daily routines that include scales, arpeggios, and etudes but also developing a strong awareness of the body is essential to cello playing.

I also focus on the well-being of the student, which includes physical relaxation and a focused mind. I encourage students to practice yoga (mainly stretches and strengthening muscles) and meditation (breathing techniques and practicing to quiet the mind). Maintaining a healthy mind and body creates flexibility in a cellist to explore even further what the instrument can create.
